It's Not Just About Honey

The final Earth Matters session for this year will be held on Monday November 19 at 5.30 pm..

Laura Noble of Clarence Native Bees will be providing information on native bees - particularly the social stingless bee, Tetragonula carbonaria.  Her session will give advice on what people can do to be caring for the bees' survival.

The session will be held in the Staffroom at Grafton Primary School, Queen Street, Grafton from 5.30 – 7 p.m. on Monday November 19.

There will be time for questions and discussion.  Refreshments will follow.

EARTH MATTERS - SCREENING OF "SACRIFICE ZONE"

The Clarence Valley Conservation Coalition’s September Earth Matters session will be held on Monday September 17 at 5.30 pm. It will be a screening of the documentary “Sacrifice Zone: the story of the real Australian gas crisis”.

“Sacrifice Zone” deals with the threat of invasive gasfields facing communities west of the range.

Santos wants to establish multiple gasfields in NSW, starting in the Pilliga forest, near Narrabri. This area is a critical recharge zone for the Great Artesian Basin.  The water in this basin is vital for communities and agriculture across vast areas of inland Australia. In addition the Pilliga forest is a very important natural area, habitat for a variety of threatened species including the koala.

This film by Cloudcatcher Media illustrates the concerns of community members and the Great Artesian Protection Group.

 

The CVCC is asking those attending to contribute a gold coin as a donation to Cloudcatcher Media.

The venue is the Staffroom at Grafton Primary School, Queen Street, Grafton from 5.30 – 7 p.m. on Monday September 21.

Refreshments will follow the screening.

EARTH MATTERS: Grafton Street Tree Heritage - Uniformity and Diversity

Monday March 19

In the first Earth Matters session of the year Jeff Thomas will discuss Grafton trees.  While Grafton is well known for its Jacarandas, there is a lot more to the treescape in the city. From the odd remnant of the original rainforest, early plantings for shade and beautification, a long relationship with the Royal Botanic Gardens Sydney and changing ideas of diversity and avenue plantings Grafton has a rich street heritage which few other towns can rival. 

Jeff Thomas is a NPWS former ranger and currently pest officer. With scientific and horticultural qualifications, he has been interested in the many fine examples of trees in the urban landscape of Grafton, many of which are rarely seen elsewhere

The session will be held in the Staffroom at Grafton Primary School, Queen Street, Grafton from 5.30 – 7 p.m. on Monday March 19.

EARTH MATTERS - The Indian or Common Myna – A Pest Species

In the final Earth Matters session of the year Laura and Kevin Noble from Clarence Valley Conservation in Action (CVCIA), will be talking about Indian or Common Mynas and why they are a threat to our native biodiversity.  Their presentation will include identification, control and a review of activity in the Clarence Valley and surrounding areas.

The session will be held in the Staffroom at Grafton Public School, Queen Street, Grafton from 5.30 – 7 p.m. on Monday November 20.

EARTH MATTERS - Butterflies in the Clarence Valley

In the fourth Earth Matters session of the year Fig Forest, Landcare Project Officer, local botanic expert and butterfly enthusiast, will give an overview of the basic ecology of butterflies. He will talk about the 110 species, mainly from the Clarence Valley, that he has observed, identified, researched and photographed.

Fig’s presentation will cover what plants to use to attract butterflies to your garden, how to identify the butterflies you have and what butterflies feed on and more.

Earth Matters is a session on environmental issues which is conducted every two months by the Clarence Valley Conservation Coalition in conjunction with the Clarence Environment Centre.
